In the summer of 2017, Darrell Fullmer approached me about a then-untitled documentary he had been working on about a crime unit in Savannah, Georgia called the Expanded Patrol Operations Unit, or EXPO.

Based off of former Savannah-Chatham police homicide detective Kevin Grogan's book "Black Sheep White Cop: Savanna EXPOsed," as well as personal accounts from Grogan, 'The Savannah Divide' looks at crime and community policing in Savannah.

With friends of mine in law enforcement and a history of less-than-favorable encounters with police, I was interested in his documentary and Grogan's personal story. I wanted to capture the harshness and solemnity of police work, as well as touch on hopes for a better police-citizen relationship within our communities. The lives of police and law enforcement officers are often misunderstood, and Darrell's documentary takes a fine look at what complexities lie in the lives of those who take it upon themselves to protect their community and the divisions we create between them.
