The End 04:46
my memory is blowing in the breeze and the moon’s eye is staring through the trees and my days are numbered and they’re few but there’s something leading me to you and i know it’s not your fault and i know it’s no one’s fault and i know it’s not your fault but i can’t help but feel like that just makes this so much worse so much worse so much worse so much worse was it worth all your while? was it worth all your time? what will you do now that she is gone? where will you go now that she is gone?

i fell asleep with dizzying thoughts and had a dream a dream, not to be forgot i walked on streets of cobblestone through broken homes, all alone i crossed a bridge to foreign land and met a man with eyes for hands he said, oh, what have you done to me? oh, what have you done? take deeper breaths now try not to swallow take longer steps now into the hollow as i ran away it began to rain but the bridge i’d crossed had not remained and thunder came with awful fright and the day had slipped into the night i turned around but the man was gone as the world turned black he sang this song he said, oh, what have you done to me? oh, what have you done? take deeper breaths now try not to swallow take longer steps now into the hollow morning bloomed and brought the sun and in my hand was a bloody gun i said, oh, what have i done to you? oh, what have i done?

The Truth 05:39
ain’t it strange how it often goes? true love is like a broke rose and your heart is like a sinking stone i know, yes, i know you know the truth it’s dead, the truth it’s dead oh, but it tastes like love when we touch oh, is it love? ain’t it strange how it often seems? true love is like a paper dream and my heart is like a drifting stream i know what you think i mean the truth it’s dead, the truth it’s dead oh, but it tastes like love when we touch oh, is it love when i hold you in my arms and you tell me that love is gone? it’s all right to feel lonely and it’s all right to be unholy so say it once, no, say it twice just make it fun, yeah, make it nice the truth it’s dead, the truth it’s dead oh, but it tastes like love when we touch oh, is it love when i hold you in my arms and you tell me that love is gone? it’s all right to feel lonely and it’s all right to be unholy so say it once, no, say it twice just make it fun, yeah, make it nice the truth it’s dead, the truth it’s dead, the truth it’s dead, the truth it’s dead, the truth

about

'Happy Hour' is a conceptual album by Reverend Gabe & His Priestly Duties.

It's a rather silly name for somewhat of a serious story (a loose narrative) about a holy man whose lover is tragically, and violently, murdered one day. After which, he abandons the church, travels across the country, forms a rock band, and engages in a whole lot of sex, drugs, and rock and roll.

Loss was the biggest motif while writing the album: loss of love, loss of foundational belief systems, and, inevitably, loss of sanity. I drew a lot from my own experiences with religion (I was raised Catholic, though now consider myself an atheist), love, and alcohol/drug abuse. I wouldn't say I am Reverend Gabe, but no doubt he is inspired by what I consider to be the worst of my qualities, if I let these qualities manifest into a destructive force.

The project originally began as a three-piece, with Jelena Gonzalez (Egg Princess) and Seth Terrell (Tiny Bird, Proud Mother). After Jelena moved to New Orleans, LA, I was positive the project was over. But after much deliberation (and serious encouragement) I decided to write out the rest of the story with new members: Emma Zimmer (vocals), Cymantha Casteen (ukulele, vocals), Sean Golightly (percussion, vocals), and Chela Scurlock (violin).

We took to MOCAF Studios in Flagstaff with Andrew Grosse and completed the album in about two weekends, though the writing took about a year or so.

I am so eternally grateful for all the help I've had in creating this piece, from the fun name calling (thanks: Arlette, Alan, Elena, and Carlos), which inspired this whole story, to all the fine musicians who helped turn this silly idea into what I consider my finest work yet (sorry: Andrew Bird).
